Decorating in a Cool Color Scheme
We all know how important the color scheme is when decorating our space. A cool color scheme of blues, grays and purple hues reflects a sophisticated and polished air. A cool color scheme does not mean that the feeling being created is dull, depressing or boring. Blue is a multi-dimensional color which can easily be utilized in an array of color schemes.
When you want to choose a single color or color palette to decorate your space, you will need to layer types of paint and fabrics to get the proper, fleshed out three dimensional look. Use various shades of blue on walls and accessories like furniture throws and pillows while using neutral colored furniture in shades of tan, white, brown or gray. A room decorated in this cool color scheme will definitely not be complete without a blue area rug. Blue contemporary rugs provide an extra layer of comfort and style to a room. Shaggy sky blue rugs give a cheerful sense of fun or you can use blue patterned rugs, Tibetan rugs, and blue rugs with patterns reminiscent of the scrimshaw artwork done by sailors on tall ships. Blue rugs can be used in earth toned rooms and nautically or tropically themed rooms. The only limitation here is which shade of blue rug you choose and which pattern you choose. Blue is great for a bathroom or spa room and also excellent for a bedroom. Blue is a popular bedroom color because it is relaxing and helps promote sleep.

White is a clean, bright, neutral color. If you can’t decide which shirt to wear with your new suit, the classic white shirt always works. It’s clean, it’s spiffy, and it shows confidence. Incorporating white into your home décor is the same. White allows natural light to reflect, thereby brightening the room without changing the lighting. White makes a room cool and sophisticated while being modern and depending upon how you use it, edgy.
If you want to add something to your space that looks great all year and brightens a room, consider white or off-white area rugs. A white rug looks nice in all sorts of textures and will match up nicely with any color scheme. Feel free to get creative by using a tiger-striped white rug, with a texture that looks like tiger stripes but is solid white. The room will become suddenly brighter and more cheerful with an off-white or white rug. You can get rugs with prints on white or off-white backgrounds if you aren’t ready for solid white.

Decorating your space doesn’t mean you have to have all light colors or adhere to some old decorating rules you learned from your mother. One of the ways to break those old rules is by decorating with dark colors. Dark colors can help create a feeling in a room for any season just as much as neutrals or bright colors.
You have to be careful about how much of those dark color choices you use in a room. Too much black, dark brown or dark gray in a room will make the room seem smaller, and can make it feel more like a cell than a room. Choose a black contemporary rug, either in a solid color or a contemporary pattern in a size appropriate for the room. Choose dark colored furniture and drapes and then use a lighter contrasting color for the walls and for throws and pillows, as well as accent pieces such as floor or table lamps. In this way, the room can be dark without making it seem claustrophobic or cell-like. If you choose to use a lot of dark colors, make certain you have plenty of lighting in the room, as dark colors will not reflect natural light as well as lighter colors. Skylights, lamps, recessed track lighting and even chandeliers are acceptable choices, as long as there is enough light in the room.

The rules our moms laid out when we were kids used to judge the cleanliness of our bedroom, apply to the entire house now that we’re adults. The look of a clean and polished room of any kind is aesthetically pleasing. In many instances, a simple rug selection can go a long way in setting the tone. For example, a black and white area rug can establish a clean and polished vibe. We all know why we want that clean and polished look to our space. If we have clutter, or a small space, we may not know how to get that polished look even though we have our space as clean as we can make it.
De-Clutter as Much as Possible
Reduce clutter in your space by getting rid of any items not currently being used. You can sell them, donate them or just put them into storage until they are needed. It’s a good idea to make a list of all the items you sell or donate, as well as the items you put into storage. This will help you to keep track of what you do and do not still own, if the need for it ever arises.

Decorating an office space is obviously not the same as decorating a home space. Rather than choose items to go into the space simply based on style, an office space must be functional and provide more room for productive use than relaxed space. Instead of occasional tables, there are file cabinets, work tables not to mention the lighting must be brighter but not overwhelming.
All these differences aside, you can still have a pleasant environment in the office. Paint the walls a light color which will reduce or eliminate glare and is pleasing to the eye. Be aware of the use of the office space as well. For example, if your space will also be used with paints or varnishes when discussing planned work with a client, you may want to consider using a washable paint, such as an enamel, which can be washed in case of spills or splatters. If your office is used to counsel clients, consider soft pastel tones with a matte finish, as these are relaxing and don’t feel clinical and cold. If you want to inject some personality and brightness into your office space, pay close attention to the rug.
